During quality control, random samples of apples from the harvest are inspected, e.g. to determine whether external and internal bruises are present. If the visible bruises on an apple do not cover more than 1 cm2 in total, the apple could still be class I, provided the flesh is not discolored.
Until now, apples had to be peeled in order to be able to check for internal discoloration caused by non-visible bruises. In the infrared spectral range, internal bruises on the apple become visible without cutting it open or damaging it.
Apples with bruises are more difficult to store and spoil more quickly, so it is advantageous to have a method for sorting different apple qualities that counteracts storage problems and food waste. State-of-the-art technology makes it quick and easy to decide whether the apple is suitable for short or long-term storage or whether it would be better to mash it.
Not only apples but also tomatoes, carrots, bananas etc. can be screened using photonic technologies without causing damage.
Even impurities in grain or seeds can be easily detected, as can rotten nuts inside their shells.
